Cylon curry club

Ceylon curry club @ Old Dutch hospital

So my foodie group who got me to explore all types of food got reunited for this month, they flow down for 2 weeks and we had our 1st outing tonight

So my friend who is was in Germany missed, Srilankan food so much and mostly she was craving seafood, (given the exorbitant price she had to pay for it was ready to splurge herself in seafood here)  was in the mood to go with ministry of crabs, but uncle the most senior member of the group suggested the Ceylon curry club

Uncle: ministry of crabs is a rip off, when we can eat a hearty meal right next door.

so here is my take of Ceylon curry club

started off with a complimentary cinnamon tea which was very good, while we had the conversation of how everyone is trying to export cinnamon out and make a second stream of income in these tough times

5🌟12.5kg Negambo lagoon crab cart LKR 12750  ( spice level - mild)

This dish was the major attraction at the meal; it featured two enormous crabs, each of which was stuffed with meat and cooked in a yellow-hued coconut curry with drumsticks to temper the heat of the crab.

Along with this, there is some pol sambol and roasted paan cut into strips. I'm not joking the portion was that small

4🌟Prawn curry LKR 2390 (spice level - mild)

Similar in flavor to the crab above and laced with turmeric for a golden tint, this dish also contained five large prawns, but it may have been a little thicker.

3🌟Beef curry LKR 2700 (spice level - mild and very sour)

The color of this beef curry was an odd maroon, resembling murky water, and the taste was more sour from the "goraka" or  Kodukkaippuli in tamil & other similer names as brindle berry, and Malabar tamarindwhich must account for the color and flavor of the gravy.

3🌟Sago delight LKR 1400 (sweet level - mild)

The butterscotch was more of a decorative piece than an infused ingredient, although it was presented nicely in a revolving glass. It was quite tacky. Due to the thick glob, the first bite was a little underwhelming, but the taste was fine.

5🌟Coconut crème brûlée LKR 2450 ( sweet)

In a long plate that looked like a flower lawn, this was very nicely presented. The crust wasn't easily breakable like other baked goods I've tried (too gorgeous to eat).

First mouthful was creamy and textured with airy coconut flakes and sweeter than sago. All of us dug into this delicacy.

5🌟 Black coffee - LKR 580 (not sweetened)

Even when it isn't sweetened, I don't like black coffee, but this had a robust flavor that didn't leave a particularly overpowering aftertaste.

Now I'm genuinely intrigued by the final bill, when I see the menu price and the actual bill we received seems like we had a discount, the reason I'm yet to discover

during this meal we had our usual conversations of the GDP value of the countries and the living wages of people is not enough to live by while I was a tad too busy with my review, also so they might think so but I do listen mind you (ahem ahem)

cheers to more food adventures like this with my inspiration group, hopefully all around the world.

Thank you Andrea, Zoey, Sanka, Tina, sun, Casper, Camila and uncle!

Total bill was LKR 24,500 including taxes for  pax
What I Noticed

1. Ambiance -We were greeted by a doorman. The setting resembled all of Sri Lanka's spices being stored in sacks, a typical dark but cheery mood for a good dining establishment. that Ministry of Crabs is much more illuminated

2. Food presentation - was marked, for instance they had a live hopper cart that comes to your table and make the hoppers fresh off only for you.

3. Food taste - 5 star

4. Staff - were polite, but most of the time was not present. a few hiccups but the food compensated it for our fussy uncle

5. Washroom - inside the venue as you enter, was very spacious and clean and fragrant of cinnamons of course!

6. Kid friendly -  yet to find out

7. Halal - yet to find out

8. The menu recommends the alcoholic meal to go with the food which is nice to see

FUN FACT

Thriving in shallow seawaters and lagoons along Sri Lanka's coastline, edible crab species are found in abundance, and they've always been an integral part of the country's traditional cuisine
What are Sri Lankan crabs?

The Sri Lankan Crab is a favourite dish amongst many Singaporeans. They are known for their succulent sweet meat which complements very well with rich and chilli crab paste or black pepper sauce, creating the Singaporean iconic seafood dish of Chilli Crab. Steam some mantou buns for dipping in the sauce!

5🤩 Crystal Prawn Dumpling LKR1500  MUST TRY  🤤 Simple but i loved it! Glistening in a pearl-like sheet, these dumplings are a visual feast. Delicately wrapped, each bite reveals a succulent prawn, offering a taste as light as the ocean breeze. 5🌟 Chicken Scallops and Chives Dumpling LKR1500 Shaped like an ear, with a slight roast enhancing the hidden, lightly flavored meatball. A vibrant presentation adds to the overall experience. 🤩 Sweet and Sour Garupa LKR7000  MUST TRY  The star of the table, initially intimidating with its head and eyes. Despite the initial scare, guests devoured it like a salad. Fried in a light batter with a golden syrup bath, the fish body surprises with a bone-free, crunchy delight. The hint of pineapple, sweet corn, and the crunch of bell pepper leave you yearning for more. 🤩 XO Fried Rice with Scallops and Prawns LKR2900  MUST TRY  A loaded delight with prawns and egg, making additional side dishes nearly obsolete. 5 ⭐️ Sich...

Kaikos - No tax

Brightly lit and featuring a play area for kids with various toys and activities, this space aims to evoke nostalgia with its old Sinhala songs reminiscent of an old Kade. Staff Are nice and welcoming  3.5 ⭐️  Salmon Cheese Sandwich (700/-)  A basic sandwich served hot, with the perfect amount of spice. Although the cheese was hardly noticeable, I'll definitely order this again. 4.5 ⭐️  Latte (650/-)  A perfectly crafted, regular latte without sugar. It’s just right. 4 ⭐️  Coconut Latte (750/-)  I initially thought this would be made with coconut milk, but it’s a regular latte topped with desiccated coconut flakes. Slightly sweeter than the regular latte, it's pleasant but not something I’d order again. 3⭐️Club Sandwich – 1000/- The fries accompanying the sandwich had an unpleasant aftertaste, suggesting that the oil used for frying was subpar. The sandwich itself fell short of a true club sandwich. While it featured multiple layers, the meat—possibly ...

Central all day dining- Shangrila buffet

New year dinner for 4 pax without taxes - 50,000/- (12,500 per person)  It was undoubtedly a crowded evening at the Central Cafe in Shangila. We had booked appointments to eat there during the celebrations for the new year. As in usual days they have a variety of menu, but they yet again made it extravagant.  There were several meat carvings, including hog, turkey, and fish, along with a wide selection of sauces, veggies, pickles, and condiments and not mention the ice carvings that one can admire inclusive a cheese fountain.      In 1971, Malaysian entrepreneur Robert Kuok introduced the Shangri-La chain of hotels. The first Shangri-La hotel debuted in Singapore in 1971, and since then the company has grown to include hotels all over the world under its renowned luxury hotel brand. Consequently, you will find some foreign chefs and management maintaining the international standards and it also  adds a Singaporean and Hong Kong touch in their menu. Even tho...
